It Wasn't "Just Bad Periods": My PMOS Story — and Why Hair On-Call Exists

In honor of PMOS Awareness Month, I want to share the story I don't tell often — the one that's actually the reason Hair On-Call exists.
If you've never heard of PMOS, that's because the name is new. It used to be called PCOS. The name changed because anyone who actually lives with it knows this isn't a "period problem" — it affects your whole body. Skin, hair, nails, energy, metabolism, all of it. PMOS stands for Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome, and that longer name says the quiet part out loud: this touches more systems than anyone warned me about.
"Just Bad Periods"
For years, I knew something was wrong. I just didn't have a name for it. Every time I brought it up, I was told it was "just bad periods." So I believed that, because what else was I supposed to believe? I wasn't diagnosed until I was 30 years old — and getting there took me advocating for myself, appointment after appointment, until someone finally listened.
When I finally got the diagnosis, I felt validated. Not devastated — validated. I knew something had been off in my body for a long time, and now I had proof it wasn't in my head.
PMOS doesn't look the same on every woman, and that's part of why it's so often missed. For me, it showed up in my scalp: shedding, easy breakage, and hair that would not retain length no matter what I did. And it wasn't just my hair. My skin was breaking out. My nails were brittle. Looking back, my whole body was trying to tell me something, and I just wasn't connecting the dots yet.
What I Tried (and What Actually Helped)
Like most of us, I went straight to products. I tried a growth oil that ended up irritating my scalp so badly it caused dandruff. So then I switched to a dandruff shampoo — which stripped my natural oils right back out, and I was starting the cycle all over again from a different direction.
What actually helped wasn't a product at all. It was a good stylist who took the time to bridge the gap between my dermatology appointments and my actual day-to-day hair care — someone who could translate "here's your diagnosis" into "here's what you actually do on wash day."
If I could go back and tell myself one thing in year one, it's this: your gut health and your vitamin levels are tied to your hair. Nobody told me that early on, and it would have saved me a lot of money and a lot of frustration.
The Gap Nobody Was Filling
Here's the part of my story that turned into a business.
After my diagnosis, I had the appointments — dermatology, endocrinology, all the specialists you'd expect. But in between those appointments, when something was happening and I didn't know what to do next, I was calling nurse hotlines just to get a real answer from someone who knew what they were talking about. Not another Google search. Not another forum thread. A real person, on call, when I actually needed one.
That's when it hit me: if that kind of access existed for my health, why didn't it exist for my hair? Hair care needed to be on-call too, because everything else in my life already was. That realization is the entire reason Hair On-Call exists — real stylists, available when you actually need them, not just when you happen to have an appointment booked three weeks out.
Some days, the fatigue still wins a round. I do this anyway, because I don't want another woman standing where I stood — figuring it out alone, appointment to appointment, with nothing in between.
We're the Bridge, Not the Diagnosis
I want to be really clear about something: Hair On-Call is not a healthcare company, and our stylists are not a substitute for your doctor. If you're dealing with a scalp condition, hair loss, or any health concern, please see a licensed physician or dermatologist. That part of the journey has to stay in medical hands.
What we exist for is everything else — the day-to-day. We exist to make expertise accessible in the moments between appointments, when you need a real answer from a real licensed stylist and you need it now, not in three weeks. We are the bridge to everyday life.
Whether it's Ask a Stylist for a quick question, Live Hair Help for real-time guidance, or the Hair Blueprint for a full personalized plan — the goal is the same one I was chasing when I was calling nurse hotlines at midnight: an actual answer, from someone who actually knows, when you actually need it.
If your hair is shedding, breaking, or just not acting right, and nobody's listening: keep advocating for yourself. Talk to your doctor. And know that the day-to-day support you're missing between appointments? That's exactly what we built this for.
